Arabian Horsepower

At 2004 Youth Nationals, AHA is hosting a new community outreach program for Albuquerque area children aged 7-12 to learn about Arabian horses. Children will be given a booklet with a list of questions about Arabian horses and a barn map showing where they can find the answers. This program will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, July 31. This is a wonderful opportunity to promote your horses and share your knowledge of the breed you love.

Get Involved:
  • Be a host station and answer questions about Arabian horses
  • Volunteer to guide the children through the barns
  • Offer a horse for petting or feeding treats

  • If you will be attending Youth Nationals and would like to participate in this program, please call Molly Benstein at (303) 696-4589 or email at Molly.Benstein@ArabianHorses.org for details and how you can help promote the Arabian horse.

    The Word: Regional Updates

Get local news straight from your Regional Youth Director! Find your region's update below and feel free to peek at what other AHA regions are up to! If your region doesn't have an update, contact your Youth Director or Coordinator.

    Region 1
As the new Region 1 Youth Director, I plan to promote the participation of youth members. My goal is to get to know as many members as possible and get them involved. To gain more participation, there needs to be careful planning of activities to ensure that everyone will be interested. At the Region 1 Championship show, we held a scavenger hunt. Also in the upcoming year, I would like to have fundraisers such as horse washes and bake sales. This is a good way to get the youth together and also raise money for the region.

The annual Region 1 youth meeting was at the SCHAA horse show. Since this is a youth qualifying show, I figured it would be a great time to get everyone together to plan the activities for the year. Topics discussed included: a Region 1 Championship show scavenger hunt, the Region 1 youth horse judging team, and delegates for the AHYA Convention.

I hope this year turns out to be a success with the activities planned and hope to see more involvement as the year goes by!

Brittany King, Region 1 Youth Director

    Region 3
Hello Region 3 youth members! I have been busy lately planning youth activities to take place at the Region 3 Sport Horse Championship show June 11-13. Thank you to Julie Beach, who has volunteered to oversee fun events including a volleyball game and a scavenger hunt. I am really excited for these events because they are all very fun and slightly different than what we have had in the past. Please contact me if you can volunteer to help with these activities. If these plans go well we can expand youth activities in the future, so we definitely hope to see you there.

I hope everyone is having a great year!

Lauren Smith, Region 3 Youth Director

    Region 6
Lately Region 6 youth have been busy with fundraisers. Recently we had our local spring show and all of our youth made web boards. These boards included our name and our website, and people had to pay to put these webs all over stall curtains. If barns wanted the boards off their stall curtains they had to pay for that too. It was a great fundraiser for us and we had a lot of fun.

The next meeting we will hold will be at a movie theater. We're going to watch The Black Stallion and then hold our meeting at a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop. Contact me if you want to join us!

Lisa Assid, Region 6 Youth Director

    Region 7
As you may know, we recently finished up our regional show. Our youth activities there were quite successful! We raised over $1,000 in prize money for our Youth Challenge and items were donated for the winners as well. The challenge was comprised of a hippology contest, a scavenger hunt, and classes from the pre-show and Regional Championship show.

We held a meeting during this time to talk to the youth about happenings at the show as well as any ideas that they would like to see happen. I discussed the position of Regional Youth Director for anyone who was interested in that position.

I hope you read the newsletter article I wrote prior to the Regional Championship show. I encourage you to contact me for any questions you may have about happenings in Region 7.

Ashley Schaffer, Region 7 Youth Director

    Region 8
Region 8 has been busy preparing for the 2004 show season! On the local level, I have had the privilege to speak to several groups of people in the last several months. One was a small group of kids and parents in a 4-H/Arabian club from Wyoming. I also spoke at the National Western Stock Show, Horse Show & Rodeo in January. I was a guest one day during the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, and talked to visitors in the Arabian breed pavilion. The great setup and wonderful volunteers in the Arabian pavilion really raised the bar for the other breeds. Several visitors took note of our Regional show dates and of the Arabian Horse Celebration coming to Denver in August. Also locally, I'm happy to say that a local club has put adult equitation and showmanship into its prize lists. Barns have generously offered to sponsor these classes at all four of the CAHC shows. Look for these classes at Regionals soon!

On the Regional level, we are working hard to get ready for Regionals June 8-12. Last year our youth activity was a scavenger hunt for teams of kids. The kids enjoyed it and met some new friends and faces along the way. We also had our annual youth meeting where we boosted attendance from 6 to 55! This is in part due to our improved communication system of weekly email updates explaining contests and events within Region 8 and AHYA. We also had a silent auction to benefit our youth account.

I have been working with our Regional Director, Chuck Mangan, and our Regional Youth Coordinator, Sheryl McConnell, organizing and planning our events for this year. At our meeting we are going to plan our decorations for the Parade of Regions, make our Regional poster and elect new officers. We would like to get a Director, Vice-Director, Secretary and Treasurer so that we will have stronger leadership and involvement. Our idea for the activity is to make Regional t-shirts. The kids want to have a mobile carrot cart to sell carrots during the show for the fund raiser.

On the national level, I am the committee chair for the Regional/National Classes Committee and we are pushing to have adult equitation and showmanship at several shows. We also think the walk-trot pleasure classes need to be split at YNL. We are starting to collect names for AHYA Convention delegate positions and hope to hold our strong domination at Convention again this year. Contact me if you want to be a delegate!

That's what we're doin'! I am excited to hear from everyone. Have a great year!

Kendra McConnell, Region 8 Youth Director

    Region 10
I attended a Region 10 Board meeting in February and reported on our January board meeting. There was not much response to the possibility of adding one adult equitation class at the Regional Show as they are tight for time as it is. Other than that, they thought everything we were doing sounded good. The report I brought to this meeting can be found on the Region 10 website at www.region10arabians.com. The Region 10 Board elected a new Regional Youth Director and Vice Director at their board meeting in March. Britta Hegge will be the incoming Youth Director and Megan Emery will be the Vice Director. Both are well qualified and plan on working together closely.

I attended a Wisconsin AHA youth meeting in April and discussed Youth Nationals with those that were there. I encouraged them to be delegates even if they weren't showing at Youth Nationals. I also talked about future Region 10 youth meetings to be held at our Region 10 Youth Roundup and Region 10 Championship show. The WAHA Youth held a Judging Clinic the end of April and it was hosted by Fox Hollow Farm.

The 2004 Region 10 Youth Roundup was a huge success. It was held May 22-23 at the Minnesota Equestrian Center, a beautiful new facility in Winona, Minnesota. The show sold about 130 stalls with around 90 horses showing. We had great sponsorships and volunteerism which made the show work financially. Thanks to all that helped out either through generosity or service! Cedar Ridge sponsored a pizza party Saturday night, accompanied by a dog costume contest, a door prize giveaway, and the Region 10 youth meeting. The attendance was phenomenal, with well over 100 youth and adults! I facilitated the meeting which included an explanation of several youth programs, the introduction of new officers, and Youth Nationals activities. AHYA Convention attendance was again encouraged and we're still discussing ideas for our Parade of Regions golf cart decorations.

I plan on sending out a postcard advertising the Region 10 youth meeting to be held at the Region 10 Championship June 16-20. In addition, I am still working on a 4-H award for the Wisconsin State Fair and the Dane County Fair (sponsored by the Region 10 Board).

Region 10 youth members, please me your email address so that I can compile a list for future use.

Kelly Jones, Region 10 Youth Director

    Region 13
Region 13 youth have been busy collecting sponsorships for our Regional Championship show garland fundraiser. This fundraiser is going well, but please contact me if you are interested! We held two youth meetings in the past couple of months. One was in Rantoul, Illinois. The other was in Indianapolis, Indiana, which was the first Region 13 joint youth meeting between Michigan and Indiana kids. This was a great accomplishment!

We have selected our Parade of Regions theme, and have a committee working on the cart. We also are collecting delegate names for AHYA Convention, and I must say I am impressed with the outcome of the sign-ups. Let me know if you'd like to add your name to the growing list!

The next Region 13 youth meeting will take place on June 25th at our Regional Championship show in Indianapolis, Indiana. We're all looking forward to Youth Nationals and Convention!

Sarah Scoble, Region 13 Youth Director

    Region 14
Region 14 and AHA had a booth at the Equine Affair in Columbus, Ohio. I attended this event on Saturday and Sunday and even brought my horse, Boss. Boss stood in the breed booth Saturday and Sunday and greeted all the visitors wandering through! I also did a presentation at the Youth Pavilion on Saturday with my horse while Region 14 Director Larry Kinneer read a presentation provided by AHA. On Sunday, I rode Boss (huntseat) in the Breed Demo with Pepper Profit (western) and Betsy Hoffman (native costume).

I attended the latest regional meeting on May 9th. There, I gave an update on the AHYA board meeting in January and requested names from any of clubs for Regional Youth Director suggestions as well as Youth Nationals attendees.

I plan to contact youth who are going to Youth Nationals and talk to them about being delegates and helping with the golf cart for the Parade of Regions.

This is my last year as a Youth Director and the Region is looking for my replacement. We will also need an adult Youth Coordinator. If you or anyone you know might be interested in these positions, please contact me or Larry Kinneer.

Caitlin Zech, Region 14 Youth Director
P.S. Do you read Region 14 youth articles in the Horseman's Corral and Arabian News? Contact me for more information.

    Region 15
Region 15 Youth are in the middle of another successful show season. At the Region 15 Championship show we have tons of youth activities planned. There will be a Region 15 youth meeting and pizza party, where we will discuss the upcoming Youth Nationals, golf cart ideas, and future plans. We will hold our 3rd Annual Hippology contest. Entry fees will be $5 per participant, so this should be a good fundraiser for us. This year we are bringing back our Horse Judging Competition, which will be open to youth from both within and outside Region 15. We will also hold an ice cream social, so everyone will be able to get to know one another and visit. Finally, we will have a Horse Treat Contest. Youth can guess how many horse cookies are in a container. The one closest to the correct number wins the container & cookies for their horse. With all of this planned for the youth, hopefully everyone will participate and have a great time!

Hope everyone is doing well! See ya soon at Youth Nationals! :o)

Brittany Butterworth, Region 15 Youth Director

    Region 17
Region 17 youth activities have been buzzing ! We've already had several fundraising activities and the show season is well underway.

The Region 18 Youth Director, Alexandra Graham, has suggested that the youth from Regions 17 & 18 make a date for a 'Pizza Night' during Canadian Nationals. This is in the planning stages.

The Youth from Region 17 will hold their annual meeting and Parade of Youth during the Regional Championship Show August 5-8 in Red Deer.

Region 17 covers a large geographical area which prevents us from meeting more that once a year. Communication is one of our biggest hurdles and getting input from all clubs remains a difficult task.

We have a number of active youth clubs. The AHA of British Columbia's youth meet once a month and have several things planned. One new program includes selecting a worthy cause each month to support by making a donation from the funds we raise. So far this club has provided donations to Pacific Riding for the Disabled and The Walk to End Breast Cancer. At an upcoming show, the youth have arranged a Penny Drive and will make a donation to the Children's Hospital. They sell chocolate bars, carrots, apples, bran mash in a bag and raffle tickets to support donations, clinics and other activities.

Central Interior AHA will be selling carrots & apples to raise funds to support their kids going to Canadian Nationals this year. They are even planning an overnight trail ride as a means to attract more youth members.

BC Half-Arabian Club youth meet monthly. For fundraising, they have sold carrots and tail bags. This club also participated in the Lower Mainland Quarter Horse Bazaar in an effort to educate folks on behalf Arabian horse and to encourage membership.

Efforts are being made to set up appointments with the local Pony Clubs and 4H Clubs to speak about the versatile Arabian horse.

Chris Peeler, Region 17 Youth Director

    Region 18
The year is starting off well here in Canada. We have five teams entered in the RYTT and everyone is eager to start the show season. Congratulations to Canadian youth members who attended the Region 14 Championship show and did well!

On April 17th and 18th, Bill and Kate Holland and their daughter Brittany, of Shadow Arch Arabians, hosted the AHAEC 2004 youth retreat weekend. 27 youth attended and the retreat was a huge success! Terry O'Sullivan taught basic horse health care and even showed some x-rays, Janet Henderson taught sport horse, and Cathy Murphy-Wright, a level one judge and trainer, was the youth and amateur coach for the weekend. The retreat was such a success thanks to the many volunteers that helped get everything underway. Despite stormy weather, a good time was had by all!

At the recent regional meeting, it was noted that hardly any youth from region 18 attend Youth Nationals because it's the same week as our Region 18 Championship show. It was suggested that we have a youth activity at Canadian Nationals. Since then, there has been a lot of discussion on this topic within our region and everyone is very enthusiastic about the idea! One night during Canadian Nationals, we plan to invite youth to have pizza and join us in a reserved section of the main arena to watch the evening session together. Right now we are planning to hold the event on Wednesday, and the pizza will be delivered after the afternoon classes. We hope that this will allow the youth to get to know each other better and have some fun at the show.

Alexandra Clark, Region 18 Youth Director
