DNA Testing
Purebreds
- DNA testing has been required for Purebred Arabian Horses since the 2002 foal crop.
- This is not for unregistered foals, as that will be a part of their registration process.
- Our DNA Order form may be used to order a DNA test for your Purebred Arabian when requesting a Certificate for Racing, or a Passport endorsed for Export.
- This test may only be requested by the Recorded Owner or Authorized Agent of the horse
Half-Arabian
- All Half-Arabian horses participating in the Halter Futurity, Performance Futurity/Maturity/Derby, AEPA, AWPA, and AHPA classes at Sport Horse Nationals, and U.S. Nationals.
- This DNA test is a parentage verification test to their Purebred parent.
- You may elect to have your Half-Arabian DNA tested for any reason, as long as you are the Recorded Owner or Authorized Agent of the horse.
Unknown Horse DNA Test
- This test is for owners who have adopted, purchased, or been gifted a horse without a Certificate of Registration.
- Our DNA database has over 170,000 DNA profiles stored that your sample will be tested against.
- The samples have been submitted from mainly purebred horses from 2002 and forward. The database also holds DNA files from Half-Arabian horses, some horses foaled before 2002, Canadian Purebred, and Canadian Partbred Arabians.
- This is the only type of DNA test AHA requests the hair sample with the request form.
- Please return a quality hair sample of 25-50 pieces of hair; pulled from the horse(s) mane or tail with the root bulb attached.
Arabian Horse Genetic Health Panel
- The World Arabian Horse Organization reports, as of September 2020, the four main conditions affecting Arabian horses which have available genetic tests are:
- Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disorder (SCID)
- Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA)
- Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS)
- Occipitoatlantoaxial or Occipital Atlanto-Axial Malformation (OAAM1)
- UC Davis, Veterinary Genetic Laboratory, offers the Arabian Health Panel. This health panel bundles the four tests for genetic diseases found in the Arabian horse.
- If you plan on breeding your Arabian Horse, genetic disease testing can help ensure the health and integrity of the next generation of Arabian Horses.
